Media

My work in purely journalistic media occurred in two distinct phases. From 1982-86, I was a reporter for several newspapers in Idaho, and wrote a weekly humor column in the final year of that period. Provided on separate pages (and linked at left) are samples of my reporting work and column writing. As a freelancer in the first half of the 1990s, while concentrating mainly on cars, I also contributed non-automotive feature articles to an array magazines and newspapers.  Samples of those articles appear on this page, below.  (See my resume for more detail.)

Magazine and Newspaper Features

Many of these features focus on favorite themes of mine such as music, travel, skiing, and participant sports. As a freelancer I've concentrated on cars and the auto industry, but also strived to "stretch" and generalize as much as possible.
Denver Real Estate
I write monthly articles about real estate for the Denver Post.

Redlining: A Radical Approach to Fitness
A near-octogenarian athlete named Loren Adkins lived in Sun Valley in 1989, and so did I. This is the uncut version of what appeared in Snow Country magazine, where I later became a contributing editor. (4,600 words)

Bluegrass Music: Tradition Bound
Published in the Denver Post Sunday Magazine, this piece compares genuine bluegrass music with what's played each year at the famed Telluride Bluegrass Festival. (2,000 words)

Business of Bluegrass
The story of one the music's leading entrepreneurs, from ColoradoBiz magazine.

Wireless Tapping: Imagine the Possibilities
Remember actual cellular phones? Digital technology extinguished the premise of this 1989 story from the Chicago Reader.  But the piece presaged a contemporary phenomenon--reality shows. (1,200 words)

Best Golf Around: Chicago's Forest Preserve National   …where they line up at midnight to play the next day.  From the Chicago Reader.  (2,400 words)

Everything Automotive at Warshawsky's
Lining up elsewhere are Chicago's hot-rodders, four-wheelers, and do-it-yourselfers.  From the Chicago Reader. (970 words)

Ski Montana
We spent a week wandering the cross-country ski haunts in western Montana, hoping to sell the article and photos by the following fall. Writing on spec is rarely so much fun, but the piece was not published.  (4,720 words)

Ski Sun Valley
An early foray into travel-writing for the in-flight magazine of a regional airline.  Celebrating the resort's 50th anniversary.

Ski the Birkie
Wisconsin's 55-kilometer Birkebeiner cross-country race is rich in tradition.  From Snow Country.

Ski the Steel
Indestructible steel skis were made by Volant, Inc., of Boulder, Colorado. (The company was less durable and went under in 2001.)  A business story from the award-winning magazine Flatirons magazine.

Naropa Institute: Bending the Curve of Culture
A Boulder landmark, Naropa once hosted Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac.  From Flatirons.  (1,400 words)

Women in Polo
The reputedly elitist sport shows its egalitarian side. From Polo magazine.

Four-wheeling Michigan
It's a Superior off-road experience, and you can end up in Paradise.  From Snow Country.
