Corporate, Financial Writing, and Media Relations
|
| In two years on the PR
staff of a Big Oil company and in 15 years since, I've written and
produced corporate communications of all kinds. No point in showing
routine press releases here. But my ongoing duties have long
included writing and producing press kits, employee newsletters and
magazines, brochures, ads, web sites, presentations, scripts, and
speeches. I am providing a few samples of:

Articles for Corporate Media |
Six Sigma at Seagate
Stories about corporate initiatives such as
the implementation of Six Sigma, at Seagate Technologies, can have
a strong human interest angle.
Chemicals and Quality
Amoco Chemical had its own formal
process-quality improvement methods, which I wrote about frequently
as editor of its quarterly magazine, The Right Chemistry.
Businesslike
One of numerous dealer and distributor profiles
I wrote for Amoco Oil, this one emulates business journalism as it
tells a success story from South Carolina.

Gasoline, Fuel of the Future
A typical executive-signed commentary, this
ghost-drafted piece deploys editorial writing skills to advocate for
the company and its industry.
Service Journalism
Colorado auto service technicians and shop
owners were the target of this brochure, produced for Envirotest, Inc.
Auto Buying
A service piece in the more
conventional sense, this article on car-buying appeared in a magazine published for First
USA credit card customers.
Saab Story
User testimonials are a powerful tool for
companies selling consumer products.
Here's one I wrote for Saab Soundings, published by the
Swedish automaker.

Managed Futures
Producing communications for fund investors can be like trying to
please Goldilocks (not too technical, not too sketchy or
simplistic). This text file contains more than 30 monthly update
letters that I wrote for holders of managed futures funds trading in
the international markets for currency, commodity, equity index, and
debt futures. (Still relatively little-known, managed futures are an
alternative investment vehicle largely uncorrelated with the stock
market.) |
The Nasdaq: What Next
Written for front page of this web site, my March 2005 comment on
the Nasdaq Composite index drew an array of responses. A
professional market technician called it "a very interesting
cycle-based perspective." Someone else called it "just a whimsical
flight of fancy." True, but I'd say it's no less valid in the big
conversation than most of what's written by professionals. |

Media
Relations
It's a particularly cost-effective way for a
writer to convey a client's message.
Media relations involves acting as an information conduit between clients and
journalists. To be effective, it helps to have worked on both sides of the fence.
The following articles were produced for one government (not
business) client--specifically the Clean Cities Program of the U.S.
Department of Energy.

Clean Machines
Here's an article I wrote for that client. It appeared with my
byline as the cover story in a prominent trade magazine.
Sold! Used
Car Auctions
This one ran as a reprint
of a story I wrote for the client's own quarterly
publication. Note the favorable mention of the client's
government program, appearing with my bio at the end of the article.

Join Clean
Cities
Ghost-written by me, this article appeared in a trade with the
client's byline.
Circle-of-Fifths Clock
Here's a media release I produced for a client with a unique
music-education product. |
