So much of my writing background is about cars that it takes several
subpages (listed below and linked at left) to index it all. As
elsewhere on this site, not all of what you'll find here is
pure journalism. The petroleum and alternative fuels stuff,
for example, written for corporate and government entities, was most influenced by the needs of
the clients. It is
all high-caliber communications work that I am proud to post here public viewing.

Vehicle Reviews
I've reviewed hundreds of cars and trucks and
written dozens vehicle roundups and car comparisons.
Many were in Snow Country, a now-extinct
ski/lifestyle magazine published by the New York Times
Company. I was the auto editor from 1991-97.
Auto Buying, Renting, Owning, and Operating
In
addition to reviews, I've written on countless consumer-oriented
automotive topics for publications including Motor
Trend, Redbook, MotorHome, Open Road, Polo, Western
Horseman, Snow Country, the Chicago Tribune, and
others.
Alternative Fuels and Renewable Energy
I was a Senior Communicator at the National Renewable Energy
Laboratory for four years ending in 2005. As such, I edited the last 11 issues
of
Alternative Fuel News, published quarterly for the U.S.
Department of Energy. It was discontinued in 2003, but
the old issues are well-preserved online.

Petroleum Fuels and Lubes
In two years on the Public Affairs staff of Amoco Corporation and
later as an outside consultant, I edited and managed production
dozens of Amoco publications. Most focused on automotive fuels
and lubricants and the business of distributing them.
Auto
Technology
I learned the "nuts and
bolts" of automotive journalism from 1986-88 as the technical editor of
Super
Automotive Service, a trade magazine for professional
technicians. I wrote dozens of features on
auto service and technology.
Colorado Car Talk
In
a two-year period, after training in TV and video production, I
produced 12 episodes of Colorado Car Talk, a public access
program airing in the Denver metropolitan area. Most episodes were
talk shows, taped in the studio with guests conversing about new
vehicles, automotive events, car travel, service and repair issues,
etc. The final episode, titled Ski Cars, was shot on
location in Steamboat Springs, Colo. It was produced prospectively
as a pilot for an ongoing show about the automotive interests of
skiers. Included were vehicle and product evaluations, travel and
tourism segments, a celebrity interview, and a segment from the Jeep
Winter Driving School. Write to me for a DVD of this 22-minute
production.
